Today’s missions:

  • get more verbs in your vocabulary
  • learn a new powerful memory technique

My friend, Elif, sent me a large list of most useful verbs in Türkçe. I spent about 30 minutes memorizing the entire thing.

How did I memorize? Not by rote-memorization. I use a mnemonic technique that associates images with words, while creating crazy story about a word.

For example, yakmak; it means to burn. I imagine a dead body being burned, which is just gross, YUCK! And that kinda relates to YAK. So yakmak is to burn.

You can also build up the story to other words. Yakalamak means to catch. I imagine the body suddenly jumping up into your arm, forcing you to catch it. Out of fear, you suddenly cry “Allah! Allah! (which means God)”. So yakalamak means to catch 😀

I also discovered that memorizing Turkish to English translation first makes it much easier (that is, look at a Turkish word, and translate it into English). Remember, we cannot just learn Turkish by memorizing alone! You should be chatting with Turkish natives on LiveMocha everyday (or at least ever other day). Make up random sentences, and ask them to correct you.

Using the system, I memorized 43 verbs in about 30 minutes. Try it!
